To get a Colorado medical marijuana card, you must be a Colorado resident, meet qualifying health criteria, and complete a simple three-step application through the state’s online registry.

If you're considering medical cannabis in Colorado, getting your MMJ card is a straightforward process that opens the door to higher purchase limits, lower taxes, and access to specialized products. Colorado’s medical marijuana program has been active since 2000 and continues to serve patients with qualifying conditions through the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE).

Step 1: Confirm Eligibility

You’ll need a provider certification from a licensed Colorado physician, physician assistant, or advanced practice nurse for qualifying conditions. The provider must submit the certification electronically to the state registry. Be sure to:

  • Request a printed copy for your records
  • Confirm that all personal and medical information is accurate
  • Complete your application within 6 months of receiving the certification

Minors must see two providers and submit two certifications.

Applicants aged 18–20 (who didn’t have a card before age 18) also need two certifications from different practices.

Step 2: Apply Online Through the State Registry

Go to the Colorado Medical Marijuana Registry and:

  • Create an account or log in if renewing
  • Upload a valid Colorado ID or driver’s license
  • Add your provider certification from the dropdown menu
  • Choose your cultivation option (personal, caregiver, or dispensary)
  • Pay the $52 application fee (as of October 2024) via credit/debit card or e-check

Fee waivers are available for those with household incomes at or below 185% of the Federal Poverty Level. You’ll need to upload a certified Colorado tax return or IRS transcript to qualify.

Step 3: Wait for Approval

If your application is complete and accurate, it’s typically approved within 1–3 business days. You’ll receive an email confirmation once processed.

Renewing Your Card

  • Cards for debilitating conditions are valid for one year
  • Cards for disabling conditions may be valid for 60 days to one year, depending on your provider’s recommendation
  • Renewal requires a new provider certification and another $29.50 fee

Step 4: Print or Display Your Card

Once approved:

  • Log into your registry account
  • Click your name under “Tracking Inbox: Patient Registration”
  • Select “Print Card” to download a PDF version

You can print it or display it on your mobile device. No physical card is mailed for online applicants.

Benefits of Having a Colorado MMJ Card

  • Higher purchase limits: Up to 2 ounces of flower, 8 grams of concentrate, or 20,000mg of THC per day
  • Lower taxes: Only 2.9% state sales tax (vs. higher recreational rates)
  • Access to medical-only products and dispensary menus
  • Caregiver support: You can designate a caregiver to assist with purchases or cultivation

Getting your Colorado MMJ card is a smart move if you rely on cannabis for medical relief. It’s fast, secure, and gives you access to a wider range of products with fewer restrictions. Unfortunately, Colorado Harvest Company no longer sells Medical Marijuana but you can stop in and look at our recreational products at any of our dispensaries.
